Some school days deserve a celebration before the lessons even begin. For Annie, a third grader at Roosevelt Dual Language Academy in San Antonio, Texas, returning to campus was one of those days.

She had completed treatment after a long battle with childhood cancer. When she came back, her school community was ready to celebrate every step that had brought her there. Students, teachers, and staff gathered for a Falcon Victory Parade, giving Annie a hero’s welcome. Together, they honored a little girl who had faced something no child should have to face.
There is something especially tender about a school celebrating this sweet little girl's return. Going to class, seeing friends, and being part of the school day can seem so ordinary, but after something like cancer treatment, those familiar moments become reasons to stop and give thanks.
Annie Shares What Helped Her Keep Going
For Annie, encouragement had helped make that return possible. “Everybody kept saying, telling me that it was fine, we’ll get through this fast, and I believed them, so I just started, just kept going,” Annie said.
She kept going. And the people around her kept giving her reasons to believe she could. Now, this brave third grader has encouragement of her own for other children facing cancer treatment.
“Be brave and be confident in yourself,” Annie said. Her words are simple, but they come from experience. She knows what it means to need courage and to lean on the reassurance of people who care.
Her School Turns Celebration Into Support for Other Families
The celebration took place during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September. Roosevelt Dual Language Academy also raised $530 for Big Love Cancer Care, a nonprofit supporting children and families during treatment. Their joy over Annie’s return became an opportunity to help other families, too.
For most people like us, this school’s response offers a beautiful picture of the love God calls us to practice. We draw close when someone is hurting. We encourage them through the hard days. And when there is good news, we rejoice together.
Annie’s treatment is complete, and she is back at school. That alone is news worth cheering. Her community made sure she heard just how much her return mattered.
