Trusting God’s Protection for Our Homeschooled Kids

In life, we often find ourselves wrestling with fears and uncertainties. As a parent today, it seems there is so much danger for our kids. With my oldest kids, I was worried about them hanging out with friends who were bad examples. Now, there are predators online who want to lure my younger kids away in very real and scary ways. Sometimes, I wish there was a way I could protect my kids from all of life’s dangers. In a world draped in shadows, I long for a guardian, a protector who can stand between our kids and the dangers of life.
Recently, I wrote a novel, Breath of Bones (link), with my homeschooled son, Nathan Goyer. It’s an extraordinary tale inspired by Jewish folklore that echoes our deep desire for protection from the evils of life. The story idea came from a Jewish legend I’d heard when visiting my oldest daughter in the Czech Republic. The story introduces us to a golem, a mystical creature created to defend a Jewish village during a great peril.
The legend of the golem is rooted in the history of the Jews of Prague, where Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel is said to have created a golem from clay to protect the Jewish community from persecution. This creature, brought to life through the mystical power of the Hebrew letters, stood as a silent sentinel, a symbol of divine protection in clay-like human form. In our novel Nathan and I asked the question, “What if the Jews of Prague tried to resurrect the golem to protect them from the Nazis in World War Two?”
Finding God in the Darkness
As I reflected on this tale, I was reminded of the many ways God assures us of His protection. (Yes, it is a steampunk, historical fantasy novel, but it has a deeper theme of trusting in God’s protection!) Unlike the golem, God’s guardianship over us is not limited by form or presence. God is omnipresent (always with us) and an omnipotent (all-powerful) force that shields us from harm and guides us through life’s darkest valleys, even when we can’t see it.
The psalmist beautifully captures the assurance of God’s protection in Psalm 121:7-8 (NIV): “The Lord will keep you from all harm—He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” This verse reminds us that God’s protection envelopes every aspect of our existence. It is a promise that we are never alone, even in the face of overwhelming challenges.
Safe in the Hand of God
It is easy to worry about our kids’ safety, as though our prayers for safety go unheard. Yet, Scripture reassures us that God is ever vigilant, a constant guardian of our hearts. Isaiah 41:10 also provides a powerful reminder: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (NIV). God’s protection is not passive. It is active and dynamic. God protects us and guides us. He offers us strength and support precisely when we—and when our homeschooled kids—need it most.
The Jews of Prague, living under the threat of persecution, found hope and courage in the story of the golem. Similarly, we can find solace in knowing that God’s guardianship is not a myth but a profound reality. Jesus reassured His disciples in John 10:28-29: “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand” (NIV). Our lives are firmly held in the hands of our Father, and nothing can separate us from His love and protection.
As we navigate the uncertainties of life—and our kids’ lives—let us remember that we are under the watchful eye of the greatest Guardian. The golem of Prague, who stood as a defender of the helpless, is interesting folklore. Yet God stands as our ultimate protector. He is ready to shield us from the storms of life. In Him, we find safety. We also discover strength, love, and a profound peace that transcends all understanding.
So, when you find yourself in the darkness before the dawn breaks and fears for our children attempt to take root in your heart, lift your eyes to the heavens. To Jesus. Trust in the One who has promised to guard your heart and your life. We are forever safe, loved, and protected in His embrace.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being our constant Protector. In times of trouble, remind us of Your promises and unfailing love. Help us to trust in Your guardianship and to find peace in the knowledge that we are never alone. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
