The Simple Way

The leaders of the G8 countries — the world's largest economic powers — are expected to make an announcement on a global food security initiative. But hunger isn't just a problem in the developing world. Approximately 1 in 6 Americans experience food insecurity, meaning they go hungry for at least some part of the year. Many efforts are organized through a non-profit Christian organization called The Simple Way -- self-described "ordinary radicals" who have lived in the area for some 15 years. Shane Claiborne, a co-founder of The Simple Way, joined some of his neighbors to share their story of a community in transformation.

FIP #2 Christianity and Other Faith Traditions

“You traverse the oceans to gain a single proselyte. Then you heap burdens upon him which he cannot carry and you do not lift a finger to help him.” (Mt. 23:15)
The early church was admonished to move on from talking about the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus and to grow into maturity of life in the Spirit. This call to maturity is a clarion call to new life; to becoming a new creation.

FIP #3 Life in he Spirit

“Those who live as their human nature dictates have their minds controlled by what human nature wants. Those who live as the Spirit directs them, have their minds controlled by what the Spirit wants. To be controlled by human nature results in death; to be controlled by the Spirit results in life and peace.” (Rom. 8: 1-6)

FIP #4 Who We Really Are

“I assure you that unless you become like children, you shall not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.” (Mt. 18:3)

“Those who live as their human nature dictates have their minds controlled by what human nature wants. Those who live as the Spirit directs them, have their minds controlled by what the Spirit wants. To be controlled by human nature results in death; to be controlled by the Spirit results in life and peace.” (Rom. 8: 1-6)

FIP #5 The False and True Self

"O men how long will your hearts be closed; how long will you love what is futile and seek what is false?" (Ps. 4:2)

At 16, he says he headed down the wrong path and began selling drugs. Since his incarceration Murphy has obtained his bachelor's degree through Mercy College, and earned a Master's of Professional Studies from New York Theological Seminary. Through his studies, Murphy has chosen a path in ministry, "I actually found out who I am now," he says. "And it's all about giving back to the community and I know that, prison doesn't define me".
